Health Problems After A House Has Flooded - Yahoo Voices - Voices.yahoo.com

It was a sad day for our area and the clean up was not pretty.Cleaning up a flooded basement was time consuming. I had to pump the water out which took almost a whole day and then clean out our basement of everything it ruined. From Cruisebooks from my military days to clothes I was saving to donate it all went in the trash. The flood didnt just take our valuables and go, it also left something in its wake. MOLD yes thats right even after cleaning out our basement and putting a dehumidifier in there it was to late. The water soaked into the wood, the concrete, and any other item that can absorb water. We had the mold taken care of, but now every time we get a heavy rain I worry if our basement will flood again. We still get water in our basement, but as renters we cant do much about it. Even after 2 years we still havent been able to get rid of all the mold because it is in the wood & concrete. The main thing I worry about is all the health risks caused by mold. Thats why I wanted to share this product called Flood Buzz with you. Now I can go to bed at night knowing that if our basement does start to flood, the Flood Buzz Alarms you of a leak before it becomes a flood. I like that Flood Buzzwill alarm me so that I wont lose everything like I did 2 years ago. Flood Buzz alarms you if you have a water leak helping you keep the damage to a minimum and where there is less water damage there is less mold which is a big health risk in any home. Clearly, leaks in the home and the potential for mold, is a hazard that must be prevented. The key toavoiding mold growth in buildings is to discover water leaks early before the leak can cause greaterproblems.

In the home it is often found in basements or under sinks that may have leaks or condensation. Respiratory Infections from mold are a common medical concern and a major health risk for persons with a compromised immune system, or in children or the elderly. The majority of mold and fungal infections occur when the mold casts off spores during reproduction. These spores then enter the mouth, nose, or even directly through the skin. Fungal infections can also occur when individuals disturb the fungus, which causes it to cast off particles into the air. The most serious health risk of a fungal infection involve the infiltration of the mold into the lungs, which generally results in fluid buildup in the lungs that leads to pneumonia. Pneumonia is an inflammation or infection in the lungs that causes the small sacs which are responsible for oxygen and carbon dioxide exchange, to become filled with pus. When mold spores get into the lungs through inhalation, the body mounts an immune response, and part of that response involves diluting the spores with water. Another very common health problem associate with mold is with an infection of the upper respiratory tract. Mold, because of its structure, sticks to the mucus membrane of the nose and sinus cavities and causes an immune response there. The early symptoms of a mold infection to the upper respiratory tract will greatly resemble the common cold, but will worsen unless the individual is removed from the environment and recontamination is prevented. Dangers and infections related to mold are prevented by making sure your home and workspace is free from the environment necessary to breed mold, which includes dark and damp areas. This includes making sure your basement is well ventilated and dry. It may be necessary to place a dehumidifier in the basement to make sure any water retention does not feed the mold.

1. Respiratory issues. When molds grow in damp, humid conditions, they produce spores that are easy to breathe in. When these spores are inhaled, they can cause coughing, wheezing, asthma attacks, sinus congestion, severe allergic reactions, and pulmonary hemorrhages. Respiratory symptoms can be both temporary and permanent, and this depends on the abundance and severity of the mold. 2. Circulatory issues. Whether the spores are inhaled, ingested, or absorbed through the skin, they can cause serious problems in the circulatory system. Such problems can include irregular heartbeat, low blood pressure, hemorrhages, heart inflammation, and permanent heart damage. Arguably the most damaging black mold health risks, circulatory damage can be avoided by effectively removing the mold. 3. General discomfort. In addition to the severe health problems that black mold can cause, it can also produce symptoms that make everyday living more difficult. These symptoms can include aches and pains, low energy, weakness, tiredness, vomiting, diarrhea, headaches, nausea, and cold like symptoms. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, it could be a sign that your home is infected with mold.
